Configure a Shared Print to DocLink Printer

The following instructions allow you to create a shared network printer that prints to a 'NUL' port (no physical print).

Here are some suggested printer drivers that are known to work.

*if not readily available, this driver may be obtained by running Windows Update when installing a new virtual printer. If not available through the update, then use an XPS driver listed above.

  1. On the DocLink server, go to the Windows Start menu > Control Panel > Printers (or Start > Devices and Printers).
  2. Click Add a Printer to open the Add Printer Wizard, click Next.
    1. Select Local Printer. Uncheck the automatically detect...box. Click Next.
    2. Select Create new port, then Local Port as the Type of port. Click Next.
    3. the Port Name dialog window enter 'NUL' (without single quotes and in all caps). Click OK, then click Next.
    4. Select a manufacturer and printer model that supports advance printing features.

      For the HP LaserJet 5 driver, click the Windows Update button.

    5. If prompted to use existing driver or replace, choose the Use or Keep option and click Next.
    6. Name the printer 'Print to DocLink' and select No when asked to designate this as the default printer, then click Next.
    7. Select the Share option and enter a share name. Optionally, enter Location and Comment.
    8. Do not click the Print a test page button when prompted. Click Next.
    9. Click Finish to exit the Add Printer Wizard.
  3. Right-click on the newly created Print to DocLink printer and select Properties.
  4. Select the Sharing tab and uncheck the Render print jobs on client computers option.
  5. Select the Advanced tab. Place a check next to the following options:
    1. Print spooled documents first
    2. Keep printed documents - This will keep the print job in the spool directory allowing time for the ERM service to pick up and process the file.
    3. Enable advanced printing features - EMF processing only. Not editable if using XPS.
  6. Click the Apply button before continuing.
  7. Click the Print Processor... button. The Print Processor window opens.
    1. For XPS - Select WinPrint as the print processor and RAW as the default data type.
    2. For EMF - Select WinPrint as the print processor and NT EMF 1.008 as the default data type.
  8. Click OK to continue.
  9. Click the Security tab, if Everyone is not listed under Groups or user names, add it.
  10. Set permissions for Everyone to allow:
    1. Print
    2. Manage Printers
    3. Manage Documents
  11. Return to the General tab and click the Print Test Page button. Click OK.
  12. Click OK again to exit the printer Properties dialog window.

The newly created Print to DocLink printer is now ready to be shared to all users who need access to it.
